ATHENS, Greece - Panathinaikos Athens eliminated Turkey's Fenerbahce 4-1 from the UEFA Cup. Still feeling high from the Galatasaray win of last week, Fenerbahce couldn't show any football on the field.
Nikos Lymberopoulos gave Panathinaikos the lead in the 24th minute and Yiannis Goumas made it 2-0 in the 31st. Tuncay Sanli's goal gave a little hope to Fenerbahce fans but five minutes later Jan Michaelsen made the score 3-1 in the 38th and Kzrystof Warzycha closed the game in the 90th: 4-1. The game played under tight security measures. More than 2,500 officers were deployed in and around the Apostolos Nikolaidis Stadium in downtown Athens. Nearby roads were closed up to five hours before the game. Everyone entering the stadium was searched. A police helicopter patrolled overhead. The first-leg in Istanbul on Oct. 31 ended 1-1, but was marred by limited violence. Both clubs' supporters exchanged insults and threw various items against each other, slightly injuring some Greek and Turkish fans. Fights broke out in Istanbul the following day. Many friendly games have been played between Greek and Turkish teams, but it was the first in an official European competition. The UEFA games were also viewed as a test for a Greek-Turkish bid to host the 2008 European soccer championships. Media reports said UEFA Europe's Soccer Organizing Body warned both clubs they could be punished if violence erupts in Thursday's game. Several meetings took place in the past week between club representatives and Greek police officials regarding security measures. Turkish sports authorities discouraged fans from traveling to Greece. Only about 150 representatives of the Turkish team and guests were expected at the match. Panathinaikos also fixed the lowest ticket price at 80 euros ($80) in
an attempt to keep out hooligans. The decision drew sharp criticism from
Panathinaikos fan clubs. |
